Reliance Industries launches Reliance Jio 4G service

Analysts say the launch will be a classic case of disruption in the fast growing connectivity market in India

Today, Reliance Industries Chairman, Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of Reliance Jio 4G SIM service which will be available from September 5 onwards. Mukesh Ambani called the company’s 4G LTE network – Jio – the biggest startup in the world with US $20 billion investment.

At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Mukesh Ambani said that Reliance Jio SIM would offer free voice services to its active users.

Mukesh Ambani said :

Indians will no more have to turn off their data. We will remove fear of high charges.

Shedding light on Reliance Jio tariff plan, Mukesh Ambani also announced a ‘free welcome offer’ for Jio customers from September 5 till December 31. As per the tariff plan of Reliance Jio, a customer will have to pay Rs.50 to get 1GB 4G internet data, which is considered the lowest in the world.

The launch caused the shares of market leaders like Bharti Airtel and Idea to slip over 9%.
