The growth story of ccTLDs (country-code Top Level Domains) continues with a rise in domain names registered in Nigeria and Venezuela. According to their local regulators, the domain names registered in the ccTLDs of Nigeria and Venezuela have grown by 42,000 and 48,000 respectively.
According to Nigerian Registry NiRA, the number of domain names registered in the Nigerian ccTLDs has already crossed 100,000 domain names with a year-on-year growth of 75%. However, the Nigerian government say that they aren’t happy with the local registrants availing hosting services outside the country and have urged them to seek services of data centers within Nigeria. The management of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) further added that doing so will not only reduce costs for registrants but also help them create jobs and boost the country’s economy.
On the other hand in Venezuela, Conatel, the National Commission of Telecommunication said that the improved figure of 48,000 ccTLDs can be attributed to .COM.VE which has recorded more than 36,000 domain names, .NET.VE which has recorded 3,757 domain names, .CO.VE which has recorded 2,648 and .WEB.VE which has recorded 1704 domain names.
Let us hope that we see this trend rising in the new year for other countries as well.
