In its battle against fake sites, DNS Belgium, in association with the FPS Economy, announced that together they will start suspending .BE domain names that are associated with fake websites within one day of notice. With this move, administrators of the .BE ccTLD and the FPS Economy believe that customers will be able to trust .BE websites.
According to DNS Belgium, the newly introduced protocol authorises them to erase .BE domain names because of their false nature. They say that the protocol which comes into effect from 1st December 2018, will allow DNS Belgium to specifically obstruct .BE domain names that:
1. Are utilized for false webshops and e-commerce sites,
2. Have phishing sites (i.e. sites which mirror different sites with the end goal to get credit card details).
DNS Belgium say that the new methodology will be applied only if there are serious crimes. They say that registrants will have two weeks to respond and in case there is no response, the suspended domain name will be permanently deleted after a period of six months.
Philip Du Bois, General Manager at DNS Belgium believes that by introducing this protocol with the FPS economy, targeting the abusers of the .BE domain and taking action against them will become easier. He also claims that with this convention, the .BE domain will be able to realise its full potential by catering to businesses and enterprises in Belgium.
FPS Economy say that the couldn’t ask DNS Belgium to take down fraudulent websites solely on the basis of fake content. Hence, they claim that many such websites with correct recognizable data (or identity that could not be proven false) remained unaffected.
As per FPS Economy, the previous procedure to take action against fraudulent websites was cumbersome and ineffective since the process took more than two weeks. However, with this new system in place, the Belgian government body believes that users of the domain will experience faster service.
In closing, the Belgian authorities said that they will also be restructuring the registration process for the .BE ccTLD in addition to strengthening its security aspect. It will be interesting to see the turn of events for the .BE domain, following the introduction of European ccTLD .RO.
