This week, Microsoft announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Deis, a company that has been at the center of the container transformation. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Deis is a developer of tools that make it easier to build applications using container orchestration technologies. Microsoft says that Deis gives developers the means to vastly improve application agility, efficiency and reliability through Kubernetes.

Microsoft said in a blog:

Containers have been at the forefront of cloud transformation in recent years, and for good reason.

Container technologies let organizations more easily build, deploy and move applications to and from the cloud.

In addition to their container expertise, Microsoft says that Deis brings a depth of open source technology experience, furthering Microsoft’s commitments to improve developer productivity and to provide choice and flexibility for customers.

Gabe Monroy, CTO of Deis said:

Microsoft has a storied history of building tools and technologies that work for developers. Paired with their cloud leadership and unambiguous support for open source software, we are impressed by the breadth, depth and reach of Microsoft to help define, shape and build new cloud-native applications.

We look forward to making Azure the best place to run containerized workloads.
