European domain registry EURid have partnered with IACC (International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition) to fight cybercrime in the .EU and .ЕЮ domain space. As per the terms of the deal, both parties will engage in joint efforts, exchanging statistical data and trends pertaining to cybercrime in order to clear the registration database from fraudulent domain names.
EURid, the domain registry for .EU and .ЕЮ domains say that they have been collaborating with various law enforcement agencies such as the Belgian Federal Ministry of Economy and the Cybersquad team to protect the domains. They say that over the last three years they have been consistently taking steps to strengthen their registration process and garner trust and security among users.
According to EURid, these concrete steps have resulted in the suspension of more than 70,000 domain names indulging in fraudulent activities. They say that this number is likely to increase after they amplify their efforts by partnering with IACC.
Speaking about the need to protect the .EU and .ЕЮ domains, Geo Van Langenhove, Legal Manager for EURid, commented:
Overall, cybercrime rates worldwide have been climbing over the past few years. It’s imperative that we continue to monitor and identify abusive registrations and alleged illegal activity happening within the .eu and .еюspace and take action in a timely manner.
IACC say that this is the first time that they have joined hands with a registry to combat online counterfeiting and piracy, underscoring their ongoing commitment to strategic partnerships with intermediaries. They believe that this partnership will take form in the right direction to protect the domains.
Bob Barchiesi, IACC President, commented:
Online counterfeiting has grown in scale, threatening Internet users’ safety and overall experience on the web. With the IACC’s expertise in anti-counterfeiting and EURid’s oversight of the .eu and .eio domain spaces, this partnership is a positive step toward ridding the Internet of counterfeiters and establishing a trusted online environment for all.
