Last week, data center company Equinix partnered with Chinese giant Alibaba to provide organizations with direct and scalable access to Alibaba’s cloud platforms via the Equinix cloud exchange. Current Equinix data centers in Hong Kong, Sydney, Silicon Valley and Washington DC are the primary areas of focus for the partnership, with London and Frankfurt soon to follow.

The Equinix Cloud Exchange, which offers access to multiple cloud service providers, is currently available in 21 markets globally, and plans to expand access to Alibaba’s cloud offerings in five other markets.

Greg Adgate, VP of global technology partners and alliances for Equinix, was optimistic when quizzed on the collaboration:

As one of the world’s leading and fastest growing cloud computing companies, Alibaba Cloud represents a significant partnership for Equinix as we continue to empower businesses around the globe to build secure, private clouds, without compromising network and application performance.

We are thrilled to offer direct access in markets across the US, Asia and Europe, and look forward to bringing additional markets online in the near future.

Likewise, deputy general manager of Alibaba Cloud Global, Yeming Wang added:

The global reach of Equinix Cloud Exchange makes it simple for Alibaba Cloud to access new markets. We are pleased to provide greater value and bring our services closer to enterprises by leveraging Equinix’s powerful, on-demand cloud connectivity.
