Today, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) announced that a total of 1.037 million registered Chinese character domain names are in use.
According to an article released by Press Trust Of India (PTI), at present, Chinese character domain names can be used in browsers, search engines and input methods. This means that the input of a Chinese character domain name in a browser can direct users to the corresponding website.
CNNIC said that Chinese domain names work exactly like regular domain names. Before the creation of Chinese domain names, PTI reports that in the 1980s, domain names were only formed with characters in the Roman alphabet.
In a statement issued today, PTI says that CNNIC called on Chinese Internet companies, especially email service providers, to actively promote the use of Chinese character domain names.
