Nokia partners with Telenor to deploy cloud solution ‘AirGile’ for mobile networks

The partnership aims to transform mobile network for Scandinavian countries by leveraging Nokia’s ‘AirFrame’ data center and ‘Cloud Packet Core’.

Telecom giant Nokia and Telenor Group have struck a strategic alliance to deploy a cloud-native solution based on the former’s AirGile technology across Denmark, Sweden and Norway. With this deal, the alliance will leverage AirFrame Datacenter and Cloud Packet Core to enhance performance, reliability and drive mobile broadband agility for users of 5G.

Telenor say that enterprises need to quickly on-board virtualized network functions across cloud-based infrastructures to reduce the time-to-market new services. They say that 5G can bring this vision into fruition, but it can be possible only if the vision is bolstered by the right environment. 

By partnering with Nokia, Telenor say that enterprises will be able to leverage the former’s rich ecosystem of third-party applications as well as its AirFrame Datacenter, Cloud Packet, SDN technologies and cloud management and orchestration solutions. They say that this alliance will pave the way for Telenor to offer their services and meet the diverse needs of different industries.

Nokia say that they will provide their expert services and use their Cloud Collaboration Hubs to optimize the deployment and support network operations across the Scandinavian countries. This agreement, claims Nokia, follows their earlier successful deployments of cloud-native solutions for Telenor’s operations in Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Morten Karlsen Sørby, EVP and head of Telenor Group’s Scandinavia cluster believes that the transition of 5G will be driven by use-cases, allowing players like Telenor to meet the requirements of various markets. He also says that as a company, they are pleased with the alliance and are looking forward to working with Nokia and provide users with new capabilities.

According to Nokia, drawing on an extensive network to provide a cloud-native solution is possible since they can leverage new efficiencies when it comes to scaling. They also claim that enterprises will be able to fully take advantage of 5G with an environment that is built on the foundation of the cloud.

It will be interesting to see how Telenor makes the most of this deal with Nokia, following the launch of AirFrame for cloud servers.
