Web technology survey firm W3Techs has confirmed that WordPress powers 30% of the websites around the world. They further added that WordPress has more than 60% CMS market share with the likes of Joomla and Drupal trailing behind them with 6.3% and 4.4% market share respectively.
According to W3Techs, the usage of WordPress websites around the world stood at 25% in November 2015. They also claim that since then WordPress has been steadily growing at the rate of 0.2% month-on-month.
W3Techs claim that in comparison to WordPress its counterparts Drupal and Joomla are also rising steadily with a growth rate of 0.05% and 0.15% year-on-year. Comparing the growth rates of the first three players in the running, W3Techs say that WordPress has emerged as a clear winner among them.
As per W3Techs, WordPress’ usage is inclusive of its WordPress.org open source downloadable software and the hosted WordPress.com platform. Speaking about their methodology to calculate the usage, W3Techs said that they include top 10 million websites as a sample given by Alexa (a web statistics and analytics portal) over a period of three months to determine the leader in the website category. They also said that they do not consider sub-domains to be separate websites and do not include redirect domains in their methodology.
Back in 2015, Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress an Automattic company, had commented:
The big opportunity is still the 57% of websites that don’t use any identifiable CMS yet, and that’s where I think there is still a ton of growth for us (and I’m also rooting for all the other open source CMSes).
Looks like their growth plans have seen the light of the day.
