Nigeria records 68,050 .NG Domain Name Registrations in 10 years

The ccTLD’s registrations achieved a milestone after NiRA’s attempt to subsidize its price

NiRa (Nigeria Internet Registration Association) today announced that the total number of .NG domain names registered in Nigeria in the last 10 years is 68,050 as of July 2016. NiRA explained that if all Nigerians decided to identify with the country and register their domain names with the suffix .NG, the county would hit up to 10 million registered domain names within the next one year.

President of NiRA, Mr. Sunday Folayan who made the disclosure said that NiRA had reduced the cost of registering domain names like .name.ng to 500 Nigerian Nairas so that all Nigerians could register their names using .NG domain name. He claimed that the initiative to reduce the cost of the domain name was to populate the .NG domain name in Nigeria.

Folayan, who gave insight to the number of domain name registrations said :

The growth of domain name registrations in the year 2016 has been on a steady increase. With 2,843 registrations and 1,537 domain renewals and 88 transfers in July 2016, these figures are the second best figures on a monthly basis this year. There were 88 domain transfers between the NiRA Accredited Registrars.

The slight increase in fresh domain name registrations could be attributed to the new price regime introduced early July 2016.
