This week, networks solutions provider HKT announced plans to build a high capacity fiber cable system between Chai Wan on the island of Hong Kong and the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate (TKOIE) in the mainland.

The company says that the new cable is called “Ultra Express Link” (UEL) and will be a 3 km subsea cable system. The project will go live in 2017 and will connect the SSW landing in Chai Wan with the TKOIE in the Sai Kung district of the mainland.

HKT said that it was developing the new route to provide diversity and lower latency connections between two parts of Hong Kong.

Mr. Alex Arena, Group Managing Director of HKT said :

The new cable, together with the existing extensive fiber infrastructure provided by HKT, will allow us to meet the rising demand for high speed and high capacity connectivity requirement from data center operators.

HKT is the only operator to provide full diversity with different options of cable route across Hong Kong. We have full fiber coverage in all data centers in Hong Kong, particularly with diversity paths in all data centers in TKOIE.
